questionable dress code....
by BmanB
I had a negative experience with the nebulous shoe policy. I rolled in wearing some retro Reebok sneakers, and of course was denied entry. Me being an out of towner from san francisco, I can appreciate an establishment's focus on a refined dress code. I was totally cool with it......until I saw a guy walk out with some gross flip-flops.
What? His dirty flip flops are more formal than my reebok sneakers? That doesn't make any sense. I pulled a door guy aside and asked him to clarify why my shoes were less formal than flip flops. And kudos to him because he addressed me with respect and just didn't brush me off as some mad drunk. His answer was vague, yet understandable: "Not my rules, I just enforce them"
So we went down the street to some place with peanuts that let me wear my shoes. I met up with a friend who is in the GR nightlife industry and I asked her about the strange Monte's shoe policy. Her answer was logical, and scary:
"It's simple, black people wear sneakers"
WOW. Now obviously this is her single observation but I trust her (friend since childhood, etc) and since this incident a week ago I have yet to come up with any other logical explanation (maybe the people at Monte's have one?). if it's true that's a damn shame (what is this 1950?). Either way, next time I'm in town I'll take me, my friends, and my sneakers elsewhere!
worst bar ever!

This place is terrible from start to finish. The bouncers think they are the sh*t, and it's so frustrating. BIGGEST EGOS EVER! I mean, its only MONTE'S, but they seem to think its the greatest club ever. But they seem to think they are Gods gift to man, and they treat you like it. Inside, the music is too loud, and because its relatively small with little ventalation, the smoke is TERRIBLE. I thought I was going to get emphaseema just from being there. The service is alright. Most of the waitresses are hot, which makes the place bearable. Great bods! A little eye candy never hurt, right? But in general, service is slow and inadequate, and the waitress didnt even seem to know the menu. My advice? Stay away from this wannabe club. Its not worth your time. Its boring, the music is terrible, the service is slow, and the bouncers are, for lack of a better word, azz holes.
Not very friendly at all.....

In my personal opinion, those people acted like they were the only club in town. The first impression was with the doorman. Big ego and tried to play the "tough guy". We had a group of 18 of us that all came in by a limo because the driver recommended the place. I had a pair of brand new $150.00 pair of tennis shoes for comfort. They would not permit me to enter because I had on tennis shoes. I was wearing a casual dress shirt and clean, neat jeans. Our whole group ended up leaving and the limo driver was very emberassed for recommending the place. They shot themselves in the foot for that one. We sat there for a minute or two before taking off, and observed 3 gals enter who were wearing tennis shoes. I guess they should have just told me that men with tennis shoes on were not permitter. The place was a joke!!
- Pros: none
- Cons: Parking, doorman makes up dress code as he goes along
