Tips for Great Lakes Shipping Co

The staff was great when we called ahead. (We were checking for food allergy purposes). They were very helpful. We had no problems with our drink waitress. But it did take at least 20 minutes for our food waitress to come to us, and she only returned because one person flagged her down. After that, she was extremely slow every time we asked for something. The only reason we were able order at all was that we had our menus closed and made it abundantly clear that we were ready. Given the prices, the food was just OK, nothing fancy like you would expect. We came in the first place because of a gift certificate. If we had not had that gift certificate, we would have gotten up and walked out. It was simply ridiculous. We were very obviously discriminated against because we are young. Very insulting. Will definitely not be returning and will certainly not be recommending it to anyone. Actually, we will advise others to steer clear of this place.

We had a fine meal &an enjoyable evening.. I was really perplexed reading the negative comments. My husband & I dined here this evening & had a fine dinner & evening. We're over 40, but HARDLEY senior citizens...but I digress. We too had a certificate from restaurant dot com. It clearly states it needs to be presented in its entirity to be valid BTW. We were greeted nicely upon entering. The decor is not all upscale & neon, but nautical & authentic...uh can you say Great Lakes Shipping Co.? I had Island Shrimp, my husband had grilled Mahi Mahi. both delicious. Cocktails were also good. This fine restaurant has been serving GR for 40 years. How many of those are still around?

not worth it. We went to t his restaurant because we wanted to try somewhere new..We also had a coupon from restaurant. com. The manager was very unprofessional and rude when we asked if he could just get the number and code from our Iphone and not have to actually print it off. (no where on the paper does it say it needs to be printed off) Yet he would not allow us to use it. He also did not even thank us for coming in as we left or anything. He was not customer friendly at all.

The service was not great either. VERY SLOW. We had to wait forever just to get our check and even longer to get the card returned back to sign the receipt. Food was not that great either. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant at all. Way to many great restaurants in GR area to settle for this experience! :)

Overpriced and Underwhelmed. I had a $25 restaurant dot com certificate so we decided to try it. When we looked up the menu online, we also found a 2-for-1 coupon that we brought along for our friends. The restaurant was packed (mostly senior citizens), but we got seated right away. Tables were very close together and not much space to walk to our table without bumping into people.

Meals were overpriced. A chicken dinner was $22, but was only worth about $12. We ordered the crab artichoke dip. We thought it was a hot dip, but it came out cold. When the server finally came back, we asked the server if it was suppose to be a cold dip, she said no. Took it back to heat it up, but when it came back it was lukewarm at best.

I had the surf and turf (prime rib and perch). Prime rib was cold and tough, but the perch was hot and good.

Everyone at the tables around us had a variety of coupons (2-for-1, Groupon, key card, restaurant dot com) and made mention of coupons several times in the menu and posted on the door as to what was and was not included. It was obvious they inflated their prices to accommodate the "discounts". Service was slow, but no incentive since all of the discounts add on a 18% gratuity.

The meal for four was $150 AFTER the $25 certificate AND 2-for-1 coupon. Ouch! Twice as much as we would have paid at other restaurants with better food and service.

No expectations!. Most people who attend this fine restaurant have expectations before going in. We however never put expectations on any visit therefore enjoying what there is to offer us. We had a grand time with above average service and great food! Some people However, you just can never please!

Chilly Restaurant. My wife and I visited Great Lakes Shipping this evening. We were seated at a table for two on the north side of the restaurant. The restaurant is heated very poorly. It couldn't have been higher than 60 degrees where we were seated. I asked for a different table more toward the middle of the restaurant and away from the windows, but was told that all other tables were reserved. There were empty tables all over the restaurant.

Service was poor. Coffee refills were slow and our waitress was no where to be found most of the evening. The food was good, but then it should be considering the high prices. ($20 for salmon)

I will not return to Great Lakes Shipping anytime soon.

Poor quality meat, Poor quality Staff.. Why did I return for a 2nd time? Meat was ordered Medium Rare. Was Served Medium Well. I returned it twice. We left after 3rd attempt. They wanted us to pay for our drinks. We refused. Went to Louis Benton.

Poor quality food, poor service. The walleye was good. The steak was thin, tough, cooked beyond requested doneness. Two of us ordered the same turf and surf and they were identical in poor quality. The third ordered Chicken Piccata and the chicken was absolutely tasteless, requested no capers to be in the dish but they were anyway. The rolls were cold and stale, the salad bar was good.

Service was very minimal, unapologetic about the steak quality, never refilled the water until requested, but was very adamant about the 18% gratuity they added. We will NEVER return to this restaurant.

Disappointing. Suppose to be a contender for best casual dining in town. Just dined at Watermark Grille (another contender at Cascade) and it was a night and day experience. GLSC was overpriced, food was average to below, steak was tough and overdone, side items were good (seafood chowder, vegies, etc),, flat bread appetizer was good, facility feels old and a bit dingy, and smoky odor from previously being a smoking facility.... but once you dine at a place like Watermark where food was reasonably priced, very gourmeish, restaurant cared about the quality of their food, best steak ever tasted (porterhouse), great appetizers, great views, etc.... you'd love them too. GLSC needs to do some updating and make their food worth the price.
