Yuppie chop shop – I had been needing a quick trim for some time, and found a $10 off any service coupon for Design One. My friend wanted to come along as well, both of us on a budget, and I told her what I had read on their website: TRIMS $10 & UP. Affordable... so we went.
We scheduled our appointments at the same time, but when we got there, my friend was able to get right into a chair, while I waited for about 15 minutes. She told them she didn't want a wash or style, just a dry trim. So they did, and she was finished in about five minutes. Finally it was my turn. Once in the chair I decided to get the wash and style since I had the coupon anyway. My cut took about 15-20 minutes.
We then both went up to the counter to pay. My cost was for a regular cut, $35, and I used the coupon. When my friends bill was rung up, the lady at the counter said, $40. ?! Both of our mouths dropped open.
Apparently, the wash and style are "complimentary," and though I had told them it was both our first times there, they failed to mention this. I told them their website said trims were $10, but they seemed to ignore my comment. The woman at the counter called someone else over, who also told us that there was only one price for hair cuts, $35 and up. My friend was in that chair for 5 MINUTES! All the lady did was take scissors, trim the ends and brush her hair. After some back and forth bickering, they said, "We can charge you $35." Annoyed and angry, we just decided to pay them and leave. "Next time you come, just know we charge one solid fee for all cuts." Our reply, "There won't be a next time."
A customer is a customer, and whether we're spending $10 or $100, they should all be treated the same. A company should offer quality service if they ever expect a consumer to return. Design One obviously doesn't care about who is it that walks in their door, only about whatever they shell out at the register.
Over priced, poor service, misleading.
IGNORED for 45 min! – When I went to Design 1, my service was just awful! One time at the Plainfield location, I waited 20 min. before ANYONE said hello and then 45 minutes LATER someone asked if I had an appointment. AND THEN - was obviously forgotten about AGAIN because I was then asked by someone else if I had an appointment. I was furious. I assumed the stylist was running behind. It turns out that nobody really knew or cared that I was there! The prices were too high even though there is a structure based on experience. Most of their stylist are brand new out of school and they claim to be "the best salon in Grand Rapids"??? I WILL NEVER EVER GO BACK!!
great customer service – they definitely have customer amenities down. i love the cucumber water. i have only had a massage there twice in the past year. the one on plainfield was great. her name is marie. another time on 28th street my husband and i went for a double massage, and that one was awful. the therapist had a good touch, but it was overall robotic at best. i was also confused on where to go afterwards. i haven't had other services in a number of years, so i can't speak to them.
After spending a LOT of money downtown at Phillip Anthony, I found this place nice and easy to get to. While the staff can be giddy at times, my stylist is a charm. She is mature, fun, and talented. I've been pleased with the flexible hours, services, and talent.
